Columbia Sportswear to use solar system

Columbia Sportswear Co. on Wednesday started installing a 100 kilowatt grid-tied solar electric system on the roof of it’s Beaverton-area headquarters.

The company (NASDAQ: COLM) is doing the project in partnership with Portland-based electrical contractor Tanner Creek Energy, which designed the system for the sportswear maker.

Once completed, the project will incorporate 570 photovoltaic panels mounted to the rooftops of two Columbia buildings.

SolarWorld, which last week opened the largest solar manufacturing plant in North America in Hillsboro, produced the solar panels and Bend-based PV Powered Inc. produced the inverter that connects the system to the electric grid.

Columbia’s news release did not identify the cost of the project, but said the company would recover any costs within the next three and a half to four years.
